JUBILEE YEAR 2025
\n\u201cA Jubilee Year is traditionally proclaimed by the Universal Church every 25 years. It is a
\nparticular year set aside to encourage the faithful to embark on pilgrimages, to repent of their
\nsins and forgive the sins of others, and to renew a focus on the spiritual life. In the Hebrew
\ntradition, as recorded in Leviticus, a Jubilee was celebrated every 50 years with the freeing of
\nslaves and the forgiveness of debts. In 1300, Pope Boniface VIII instituted the first Christian
\nJubilee, and since then the Church has designated each new Jubilee as a special year of grace and
\nforgiveness, offering the faithful an opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence.\u201d Catholic

\nOn Christmas eve 2024 Pope Frances declared 2025 a Year of Jubilee with a papal bull,
\ntitled \u201cSpes Non Confudit,\u201d meaning \u201cHope Does Not Disappoint.\u201d The Jubilee Year begun
\nwith the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter\u2019s Basilica.
\nThe central message of this Jubilee year is \u201cHOPE\u201d and the theme is \u201cPilgrims of Hope\u201d
\nDuring this year 2025 \u201cthe pope invites us to renew in the hope of Christ, using St. Paul the
\nApostle as a guide for this special year\u201d.
\nHe went on to say that \u201cwe all know what it is to hope\u201d and \u201cin the heart of each person, hope
\ndwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the
\nfuture may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting
\nfeelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm
\nconviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged,
\npessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness\u201d.
\nPope Francis invites us to become \u201cpilgrims of hope\u201d emphasizing that \u201chope and kindness touch
\nthe very heart of the Gospel.\u201d He goes on to say that \u201ckindness is not a diplomatic strategy or a
\nset of rules to ensure social harmony or to obtain other advantages\u201d but rather \u201ca form of love
\nthat opens hearts to acceptance and helps us all to become more humble.\u201d<\/p>
