We seek to create relationships with each other, the whole of creation, and with God.

Jesus reveals His Sacred Heart as a sign of God’s boundless love for all humanity. As RSCJ, we are called to contemplate this love, allow it to transform us, and share it with the world. Through our lives and mission, we seek to discover and reveal God’s love, becoming one heart and one mind in the Heart of Jesus.

The Spirituality of the Religious of the Sacred Heart

Hilda Bamwine RSCJ

The Spirituality of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is at the heart of our identity and mission. We are called to contemplate the Heart of Jesus, a Heart that loves without conditions, a Heart that gives itself generously for the life of others. As the Province of Africa, we are missioned, as Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to embody the charism of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, that is to: Glorify the Heart of Jesus and answer His call to discover and reveal his love letting ourselves be transformed by His Spirit…. through our love and service to radiate the very love of His Heart.” (Const.par.5) In the Province of Africa, we ought to live our spirituality in ways that speak to realities of our Province. The African context offers us concrete ways of understanding and expressing the love of the Heart of Jesus. In cultures of Africa, hospitality means making room for the stranger, sharing even when what is there is little. Paragraph 56 of our Constitutions underscores our traditional way of hospitality when it calls us to “Strive to reduce our needs, to have less in order to share”. The African spirit of family reminds us that another’s joy or suffering concerns the whole community. We see this solidarity when families care for the sick, when neighbors support one another during bereavement and when communities come together to celebrate. These are beautiful expressions of love that resonate deeply with the compassionate Heart of Jesus. However, insecurity these days have impacted our trust of neighbor! Have you noticed? We are cautious of who we let in! We live amidst painful realities: poverty, unemployment among young people, the effects of conflict and displacement, and the wounds caused by division, injustice, and exclusion seen in the vulnerability of women and children leave alone the loneliness of older people! Within our own communities, cultural differences, misunderstandings, and tensions can arise and challenge our ability to live our spirituality of living with the love of the Heart of Jesus. The spirituality of the Sacred Heart invites us not to turn away from these realities but to allow the Heart of Jesus to shape our responses. For instance, we listen to those whose voices are rarely heard and build communities where every person feels valued, loved and belongs. In conclusion, as the Province of Africa, how can we re-capture and live core African values? What does the Heart of Jesus ask of us in the concrete realities of Africa today and how can our lives and ministries become a living expression of His love? Hilda Bamwine RSCJ

Celebrating 100 years of Saint Madelein Sophie's canonisation

“Be humble, be simple, and bring joy to others.” — Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat

In 2025 we joyfully celebrated 100 years since the canonization of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, a woman whose life continues to inspire hearts around the world. Born in 1779 in Joigny, France, Madeleine Sophie founded the Society of the Sacred Heart, dedicating her life to forming young people in faith, compassion, and wisdom. She believed that true education transforms not only the mind but also the heart — guiding each person toward a deep relationship with God and generous service to others. Canonized in 1925, her vision of “discovering and revealing the Heart of Jesus” remains alive today in schools and communities across the globe. We continue to give thanks to God for her courage, vision, and enduring legacy. May her example inspire us to live with hope, educate with love, and bring Christ’s compassion into our world. Lord, we pray in thanksgiving for the life and witness of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. Through her example, teach us to love deeply, serve generously, and trust in Your Heart. May her spirit continue to inspire us to form lives rooted in faith, compassion, and hope. Grant that we may reveal Your love wherever we are. Amen.

By our charism, we are consecrated to GLORIFYING THE HEART OF JESUS: we answer His call to discover and reveal His love letting ourselves be transformed by His Spirit so as to live united and conformed to Him, and through our love and service to radiate the very love of His Heart. (Constitutions, #4)
… The pierced Heart of Jesus opens our being to the depths of God and to the anguish of humankind. Jesus draws us into His movement of adoration of the Father and love for all, especially those who are poor." (#8)

Our spirituality is rooted in the pierced heart of Christ. It is a journey of spiritual union and transformation that invites respond to Christ’s invitation of living His love and service. It is a call to live in union with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. His love draws us into a deeper communion with others. Through our love, humility, and selfless service, we radiate the compassionate love of His Sacred Heart to the world. C
